Interesting Person Interview Series: Kelli

Today I'm thrilled to share my interview with my amazing friend Kelli.  Kelli and I have been friends for over fiften years (!!) and though we haven't lived in the same area since high school, we've been able to stay tight through the wonders of the internet. :)

1)       What is your name, and who are you?
Kelli Kerton- Hmmm I am still finding out "who" I am every day, but currently I am a wife, sister, daughter, and super fun aunt :)

2)       How do you know Kate?
Kate and I met the summer of 7th grade when she moved to Cedar Rapids. We would walk to our neighborhood pool and boy watch all day long! We then went to high school together and although Kate went to Iowa and I went to UNI we always stayed in touch! Our friendship really blossomed after college (thanks to G-chat and Facebook) and although we are in different states we are closer than ever! Kate is a phenomenal friend who isn't afraid to give me advice, talk about life, help a sista out whenever I ask and she is a wonderful secret keeper! AND we have so much fun shopping via email/g chat together!

3)       Tell me about a typical day in your life.
No day is ever the same! I am either traveling around the great state of Iowa, Nebraska, or Missouri. I wake up and let our newest addition to our family (Stanley 12 week old yellow lab) out to go potty, feed him and then begin getting ready. Then I drive all over to different Allstate agents offices to help them make more money! A typical evening I am either doing something with my husband, volunteering, hanging with friends or out and about around Des Moines!

4)       What’s the most challenging part of your life (could be a pet peeve, a work or family issue, whatever).
The most CHALLENGING thing in my life currently is training our new puppy. Let's just say it is WONDERFUL prep for a child someday because life isn't about just me anymore. AND playing the chase game halfway down the neighborhood to get him back in our yard down dressed in full work attire is the BIGGEST test of patience EVER. Unfortunately, the neighbors have definitely heard me drop a few F-BOMBS. oops :)
Other than that I am constantly working on balancing work/family time. I want to be successful but have realized working  60-70 hours a week and not seeing the ones you love isn't worth it. LIVE IT UP!

5)       What are you likely to be doing at 8pm on a Saturday night?
Continuing my buzz with my friends that was most likely started a couple hours earlier  :)

6)       Paint me a picture of your life in five years.
5 years- I would LOVE to own my own Allstate Agency and have a baby! Maybe a second on the way! We have a wonderful home in West Des Moines, IA and live close to family so I hope all that stays the same!

7)       If you could be given any gift, what would it be?
I am finding a hard way to describe this, but I have always said I wish I was able to do this on a bigger level. I wish SO bad I could be like Ellen Degeneres or Oprah Winfrey and surprise families who struggle with bills, or parents who lose their job and cant buy clothes/food.  I would LOVE to knock on someone's door and say hey guess what your mortgage is paid for! I love giving back! Makes me SO HAPPY when I see others happy. So I would love to be given money-but not for my personal use at all strictly for others who NEED it!

8)       What part of your morning routine do you consider essential?
Coffee! Love me some K cups!!!!!!

9)       What one deceased person would you like an hour with?
My Uncle Bill. He was one of the neatest people to walk this Earth. He knew how to make EVERYONE feel like they were his favorite. Pretty sure deep down each person truly thinks they were his favorite(I really was)! We were so close and he was a HUGE part of the reason I am where I am with my career. I just miss him and would love to give him another hug, hear his laugh, smell his cologne and hear him call me "Kelli Welli."

10)   If you could go anywhere in the world on vacation, where would you guy and why? Have you been there before?
I would LOVE to see Ireland, Italy, France, Africa! Just a few on my bucket list!

11)   You have ten minutes to give a speech to college seniors.  What do you talk about?
Insurance- sounds silly but I have sold insurance, been a claims adjuster, and now am on the corporate side with agents every day. It is UNBELIEVABLE how little most people know about Insurance when in fact behind your doctor your agent is the 2nd most important person in your life. They are insuring your BIGGEST assets(home, cars, business), YOUR LIFE and YOUR INVESTMENTS. So if you're a senior in college Ill teach you about investments and coverages in a nut shell. If you are an adult reading this call your agent and get a review on EVERYTHING. It's shocking what you might think is covered and really isn't and if you really will have enough money to retire :)

12)   What is your all-time favorite song?
Very tough question. I love AC/DC- "Shook Me All Night Long" gets me pumped and makes me think of my dad!

13)   If you weren’t in your current occupation, what would you like to do?
I love what I do and think I'm pretty good at it, but damn I would love to be an event planner for a big corporation. Or maybe a bat girl for the St. Louis Cardinals!!! Ha! Ultimately I want to own my own business!

14)   Tell me about your family.
MY FAMILY IS AMAZING! They are why I am who I am. My husband Zach is amazing. I am so blessed to be his wifey! He is one of the only people I truly enjoy spending a part of EVERY DAY with! And he puts up with my sh*t! My Mom and Dad have been married for 32 years and are amazing role models not only with marriage but their love for their family and their incredible Faith. I have 3 brothers (1 older and 2 younger) who I would do anything for. I love every minute I get to spend with them. We have so much fun together! I also have 1 sister-in-law who was my sorority sister in college, a beautiful 2.5 yr old niece(Elle) and another NIECE due in October! And then of course Stanley the yellow lab who we got 6 weeks ago!

Because of my family (especially my Dad) I make it a goal every day to grow physically, mentally and spiritually. My dad has always said every day do a RAK. RAK=random act of kindness. Try it- it makes the day a little better when you do something for someone else! Family is SO IMPORTANT to me!

15)   What do you “know now” that you wish you “knew then”?
Watching my 16 year old brother makes me smile and realize "that doesn't really matter" when he tells me high school scoop or drama going on at the school, but I smile because I know he has to live and learn on his own (of course I give my best advice). There's so much we "know now" just from trial and error! I will say I do KNOW that it is a lot harder to lose weight NOW then it was in college :)

Thanks, Kelli!

  1. This Kelli person reminds me of a very happy and fun girl who used to live in our neighborhood - always so smiley and always enthusiastic! And darn good at softball! Here's to Mrs. Kerton!
