2) Go to a Chicago event

The full goal read:

"2) Go to a Chicago event, in the vein of the Chicago Pride Parade, Chicago Air & Water Show, etc".

Which was convenient, since you could actually watch the Air & Water show from my living room couch.

I would still like to do more Chicago events, and I plan to in my 27th year, but for the purposes of this blog.... well, see below:

I love storms. Especially when I am not out in the elements, but instead safe and sound in my apartment.

Or Scott's car, heading back to Iowa.

Fire in the Sky

A few weeks ago, Scott and I walked south of Navy Pier to a bridge near the Shedd. We sat with our feet dangling in the Lake and watched a pretty spectacular set of fireworks. You can see the fireworks (sort of) on the far right hand side of the bottom two photos.

The best part of wedding planning...

My mom's facebook status last week:

"Rehearsal dinner place? Check! Wedding bands? Check! Cake? Needs further research!"

And with research like this who can blame us?

Cocktailing

Now that I'm closer to 30 than to 21, I think it's time to update my cocktail of choice. The above is my newest concoction - strawberry vodka, Diet 7-Up, and lots of (in this case, frozen) strawberries. Bethenny's got nothin' on me!

I am so lucky

Nothing like a birthday to make you feel like the most special (lower case S) girl in the world. I am so lucky to have had all of the shout-outs, calls, texts, emails.

My amazing coworkers, Colleen & Jordyn even made me the above cake.

And my love Scottie sent me this flower-cupcake.

Happy birthday to me :)

A year ago tonight I got engaged at, you guessed it, the Melting Pot in Huntsville, AL. It was the best day ever. (The photo was actually taken 8 months later, when my parents visited Scott in Huntsville).

Twenty-six is going to be a big year (um, for instance, I'm getting married and am going to then be living with a BOY) but it's also going to be a great year.

I cannot wait to tackle this list particularly if number 13 doesn't kill me first.

What do you think of my list?

THE YEAR OF THE KATE: A recap

Twenty-five was an amazing year for me.

I got engaged, moved in to my very own apartment, and in a lot of ways, felt like a real grownup adult for the first time.

I also did a lot of other things. I read a lot. I went for bike rides, runs and walks.

I visited Alabama, New Orleans, and of course Iowa.

I went to games, games and more games. I saw concerts, cousins, and the Anchorman guy.

I cherished my family and my friends.

I drank here, there, and everywhere and I did a little cooking along the way.

I talked about politics, sports, religion, gay rights, and marriage.

Three of my favorite men moved to Chicago.

I don't know how twenty-six is going to top it, but I'm going to bust my ass trying.

Starting tomorrow.

#25 Run a 5K

I'll admit: this goal was initially intended as an ACTUAL 5K, one where pre-registration and fellow 5K runners were involved.

But.

My birthday is on Wednesday (which concludes the Twenty-six by 26 year , so on Sunday I went for an equitable run run/walk and, well, since it's over 3.1m I say that it counts.

My course below (mileage in the upper right hand corner):

Happiness is...

... clean sheets, a spotless apartment, and nothing left on the "to do" list.

... a rejuvinated iPod playlist, the TV turned off, and a solo living room dance party

... lit candles, music blaring, blogging inspiration.

Lyrics of the Day

and its funny how it`s the little things in life that mean the most
not where you live, what you drive or the price tag on your clothes
there`s no dollar sign on a piece of mind; this i`ve come to know
so if you agree have a drink with me
raise your glasses for a toast
to a little bit of chicken fried
-zac brown band, chicken fried

#16 Join an athletic team/group

Last week I began a 30-day Bikram Challenge.

I'm a few days in by now, and let me tell you, it SUCKS. It is HARD. I have consumed more water than I thought was possible, sweat more that should be reasonable, and exerted more energy than I thought I had.

BUT.

I am kind of loving it? I've pretty much completely stopped doing anything else for exercise during these 30 days, and thank goodness for that.

I'll let you know how the rest of the days go, but for now...

Check!

Quote of the Day

"Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license. Indeed the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California constitution the notion that opposite sex couples are superior to same sex couples" - Judge Vaughn Walker

August 2, 1997

I was twelve years old when my mom married Shawn Steil.

Twelve years worth is a lot of moments, a lot of days, a lot of memories.

It is almost half of my life, but to be honest? I barely remember how it was before.

Almost nothing that happened before matters - but what does matter is my family, the family I was born in to on August 11, 1984, and the family that was created, on August 2, 1997.

I didn't know it at the time, but it was truly one of the best days of my life.

Happy 13 years, Mom & Dad. Cheers to many, many, many more!

Love, your maid-of-honor

Lyrics of the Day

Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Six hundred minutes
How do you measure, measure a year?

In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights
In cups of coffee
In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife.

In five hundred twenty-five thousand
Six hundred minutes
How do you measure
A year in the life?
-Rent, Seasons of Love
